Braemar Hospital a case study for innovators

Braemar Hospital went under the x-ray vision of 20 leading CEOs and executive leaders from across Aotearoa New Zealand at the renowned Institute for Strategic Leadership Programme in Queenstown.

Chief Executive of Braemar Hospital, Fiona Michel says the chance to be a real-world case study for a multi-disciplined group of leaders to analyse and apply their strategic thinking was an opportunity not to pass by.

Fiona attended two days of the week-long Strategic Leadership Programme with Braemar Charitable Trust Manager, Paula Baker and Braemar Hospital Board Director, Renae Smart to “present who we are and we do”.

‘We jumped at the chance to be part of this, and I was fascinated to hear what this group had to say. Like all the leaders in the room, we can find ourselves working ‘in’ rather than ‘on’ our business, so hearing a view from the outside looking in on ways we can flourish and grow, is priceless,” Fiona says.

“Braemar Hospital celebrates its centenary 2026, and we’re working on taking this legacy forward into the next 100 years to continue doing good work for good people. The insights we gained from being a case study for the Institute of Strategic Leadership Programme pushed us to be the best we can be.”

For Braemar Charitable Trust Manager Paula Baker, the opportunity was unique and special, as was introducing the Trust and “the work we do in the community” to a dynamic group of executive leaders.

“It is not widely known the Trust is the 100% shareholder of Braemar Hospital and we are funding free surgeries for those who face extensive wait times and can’t afford private treatment, as well as research and capability building in the health sector. We’ve been working to build awareness, so having fresh eyes over our kaupapa in the community was invaluable.”
